First edition published in 1651 under title: The English dancing-master.
Available on microfilm.
Originally published in 1650 under the title of The English dancing master, this work went through numerous editions from 1652 to 1728. Compiled by John Playford (1623-1687), a publisher of music books, the treatise is considered an important work on English country dances, a form of dance where couples perform a series of set patterns. The eighth edition "...is the first edition to be published by Henry Playford, who announces that he has 'left out' some of the old dances, but in their place added twice as many new ones never before printed. Some of these are from the Appendices of 1688 and 1689; in all, there are 220." Dean-Smith (1957)
