John Peppin was the son of Gerald Peppin, the vicar of Marston Magna in Somerset, who was a friend of Charles Marson, acquaintance of Cecil Sharp and occasional lecturer on folk song. John's daughters Geraldine and Mary were musicians and recorded for Topic Records.
